Explore Belvès: A Medieval Village in the Dordogne.

Nestled in the heart of the Dordogne region in southwest France, Belvès is one of the most captivating medieval villages in the country. With its honey-coloured stone houses, winding cobbled streets, and panoramic views over the valley, Belvès offers a rare glimpse into authentic old-world France.

Unlike many tourist-heavy destinations, Belvès retains a quiet, lived-in charm — making it one of the most beautiful villages in Dordogne to explore at a slower pace.

A Journey Through the Medieval Town of Belvès

Walking through Belvès feels like stepping back in time. The village is built on a rocky promontory, creating layers of history visible at every turn.

Wander the Medieval Streets

Narrow lanes wind through the old town, lined with stone houses and hidden passageways that invite slow exploration.

Discover Hidden Courtyards and Stone Houses

Behind unassuming doors, you’ll find peaceful courtyards and centuries-old architecture that tell the story of everyday life in medieval France.

Panoramic Views Over the Dordogne Countryside

From the upper streets, sweeping views stretch across forests, valleys, and distant villages.

The village remains quietly authentic — no over-commercialisation, just the soft rhythm of village life.

A JOURNEY THROUGH TIME

A town of character and history.

Perched high above the valley, Belvès has preserved its medieval soul. From its ancient fortress walls and medieval lanes, to its stone houses and hidden courtyards, the town invites you to slow down and soak up its unique atmosphere.

The village developed around its elevated position, offering natural protection and strategic advantage. Like much of the Dordogne, Belvès played a role in the conflict between France and England during the 100 years war.

Careful restoration has allowed Belvès to maintain its authentic medieval character and Belvès is officially recognised among the “Plus Beaux Villages de France” - for good reason.

With authentic and unspoiled charm, there is a natural, lived-in quality here that many French villages have lost.

Not only that, Belvès is a Perfect Base to explore the Dordogne. Its location makes it ideal for exploring nearby castles, caves, and river valleys.
