Day 1 - Around Belvès
Beynac-et-Cazenac
One of the most iconic sights in the Dordogne, Beynac Castle sits high above the river on a sheer limestone cliff.
Around 21 minutes from Belvès (23 km)
Exceptionally well preserved
Panoramic views across the Dordogne Valley
Arguably the most dramatic castle in the region, Beynac feels more like a fortress than a residence, with narrow passageways and defensive features dating back to the Middle Ages.
The views from the top are some of the best in the Dordogne.
Castelnaud-la-Chapelle
Just across the valley from Beynac, Castelnaud Castle offers a completely different experience.
Around 9 minutes from Beynac (6.4 km)
Museum of medieval warfare
Interactive displays and reconstructed weapons
One of the most engaging castles to visit, Castelnaud brings history to life and is particularly good if you want more context about the region’s past.
The views back across to Beynac are a highlight in themselves.
Château des Milandes
A short distance from Castelnaud, Château des Milandes is known for its elegance and unique history.
Former home of Josephine Baker
Beautiful gardens and terraces
Falconry displays during the season
Unlike the defensive castles nearby, Milandes feels refined and lived-in, offering a glimpse into a different side of Dordogne life.
Known as much for its story as its architecture.
Château de Biron
Set in open countryside, Biron Castle is one of the largest and most impressive châteaux in the Dordogne.
Around 25 minutes from Belvès
A mix of architectural styles spanning centuries
Expansive rooms and wide-open surroundings
Less crowded than the valley castles, Biron has a very different feel — more spacious, quieter and atmospheric.
It’s well worth combining with a visit to Monpazier.
Château de Commarque
For something a little more off the beaten path, Commarque offers a more rugged and atmospheric experience.
Located in the Vézère Valley
Ruins set among cliffs and woodland
Close to prehistoric sites
Partially restored but still raw in places, Commarque feels closer to a historical site than a polished attraction.
Ideal if you’re looking for something quieter and more adventurous.
