One river · Four remarkable places · A full day in the Dordogne Valley
Allow a full day. Longer if the river persuades you to stay.
One river. Four unforgettable places. A journey through the landscape that defines the Dordogne.
There are days when the journey matters just as much as the destination.
From the hilltop village of Belvès, this route descends towards the Dordogne River and into one of the most celebrated landscapes in France.
Clifftop villages appear above the trees. Canoes drift beneath limestone walls. Honey-coloured houses line the riverbank and medieval castles rise high above the valley.
This is the Dordogne of postcards and paintings.
But seen from the road, the river and the villages themselves, it feels even more extraordinary.
01 — DOMME
ABOVE THE DORDOGNE
Begin high above the valley.
The bastide of Domme occupies one of the most spectacular positions in the Périgord Noir.
Beyond its fortified gates and golden-stone streets lies an extraordinary view.
Far below, the Dordogne winds through fields, forests and villages — revealing the landscape you are about to explore.
Walk to the viewpoint. Find the river.
Then follow it.
02 — CÉNAC
DOWN TO THE RIVER
From Domme, descend towards Cénac-et-Saint-Julien.
Here, the perspective changes completely.
The river that appeared like a silver ribbon from Domme is suddenly beside you.
This is where canoes slip into the water and begin one of the great Dordogne journeys — drifting downstream beneath cliffs, villages and castles.
You can continue by road.
Or see the valley as it has been seen for centuries: from the river.
03 — LA ROQUE-GAGEAC
BETWEEN THE CLIFF AND THE RIVER
Few villages have a setting quite like La Roque-Gageac.
Pressed between a towering limestone cliff and the Dordogne River, its honey-coloured houses seem to follow the curve of the water.
Walk beside the river. Climb into the village. Watch the gabarres move slowly across the Dordogne.
And occasionally?
Look up.
The cliff is always there.
04 — BEYNAC
WHERE THE CASTLE WATCHES THE RIVER
Follow the Dordogne west and the silhouette of Château de Beynac begins to appear.
Below it, Beynac-et-Cazenac climbs steeply from the river.
Stone lanes twist upwards between ancient houses towards the fortress high above.
From the water, Beynac is beautiful.
From the castle?
The entire valley opens beneath you.
It is a fitting final stop on a journey shaped by the Dordogne River.

RETURN TO BELVÈS
BACK TO THE HILLTOP
Leave the river behind and follow the road through the wooded countryside of the Périgord Noir.
The valley slowly disappears.
Then, above the landscape, Belvès returns.
Seven bell towers. Medieval streets. A table waiting somewhere beneath the old stone buildings.
A quiet ending to an unforgettable day in the Dordogne Valley.
